Al Cane
Born in Manchester. Parents emigrated to southern Africa in 1960, then called Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Left the country in 1973 in the midst of a guerrilla war and moved to London to study photography and radio production.
A photographer since the late 70's. Trained in London and San Francisco.
Postcard and greeting card designer.
Self employed as a freelance photographer and graphic designer since 1996, before that
worked in community arts in Oxford and community print projects in London.
1999 to 2003 editor of Leys News, a community newspaper for Blackbird Leys, distributed free to every house quarterly.
2001 - 2004 photographer and chief graphic designer for Cowley Road Carnival, which
grew into Oxford's biggest community event.
Photographic areas of interest include community events, taking people informally, exploring nature, close ups, landscapes, textures, signs and odd details.
Have travelled widely and photographed in the USA, central America, southern Africa, New Zealand and all parts of Europe.
Used to shoot on film, but in the last three years have moved totally into the digital darkroom. Spending spare time scanning in transparencies and negatives to give them a new lease of life.
Brought out a series of collage postcards based
on Oxford images in 1998. Sold in many Oxford shops (see collage gallery) and some are still available.
